Signs a Tree May Need Prompt Attention

A tree does not have to be completely dead to create concern. Sudden changes, structural defects, and large dead or broken parts matter most when people, buildings, vehicles, or access routes are within striking distance.

Changes worth noticing

New trunk cracks, cavities with significant decay, mushrooms at the base, soil lifting around the roots, a new lean, hanging limbs, major dead sections, and recently split unions can all justify a closer look.

Targets change the urgency

A defect over an unused corner of a large lot is different from the same defect over a bedroom, driveway, sidewalk, play area, or parked vehicle.

What not to do

Do not stand beneath a visibly broken or suspended limb to inspect it. Do not cut loaded storm-damaged wood unless you understand how the pieces may move.
