Tree Roots Near a Foundation: Before You Cut or Remove

Seeing large roots near a house can be alarming, but proximity alone does not prove that a root caused structural damage. The right response depends on the tree, soil, foundation, drainage, and what changes are actually occurring.

Do not cut major roots casually

Large root cuts can affect tree stability and health. The closer the cut is to the trunk, the more consequential it can be.

Separate tree questions from building questions

Cracks, settlement, moisture problems, and foundation movement can have several causes. A tree-service decision should not substitute for appropriate building or drainage evaluation.

When removal enters the discussion

If a tree cannot be retained without unacceptable conflict or root cutting that would compromise stability, removal may be considered as part of a broader site plan.

Plan before excavation

If construction, trenching, grading, or hardscape work is planned near a mature tree, decide early whether the goal is tree preservation or site redevelopment.
