What to Expect After Stump Grinding

Grinding changes a stump into a mix of chips and soil, but the site still needs a plan. What happens next depends on the depth of grinding and whether the area will become lawn, planting space, or something else.

The hole and grindings

The grindings may be left as a mound, used to backfill the hole, or removed depending on the agreed scope.

Settling

Wood chips decompose and can lose volume over time. Additional soil may be needed later if the area settles.

Root decay

Most roots remain underground and gradually decay. This is normal after grinding.

Replanting

A new tree is often easier to establish slightly away from the old stump location rather than directly in the wood-chip-filled cavity.

Safety noteTree work can involve unstable wood, falling material, equipment, and electrical hazards. For active electrical hazards or immediate threats to life, contact the appropriate utility or emergency service first.
