Storm-Damaged Trees: A Safe First Look

After strong wind, heavy rain, or ice, tree damage is not always limited to what fell on the ground. Cracks, hanging limbs, torn attachments, and root movement may remain overhead or partly hidden.

Check from the ground first

Walk the property only where it is safe. Look for hanging branches, fresh splinters, split unions, trunk cracks, newly exposed roots, or a canopy that suddenly looks uneven.

Keep clear of suspended wood

A broken limb can remain caught in the canopy and fall later. Do not work or park beneath it.

Power-line warning

Treat any tree touching or close enough to affect electrical conductors as an electrical hazard. Contact the utility; do not attempt to move the tree yourself.

Prioritize the most consequential damage

A damaged tree over a roof, road, driveway, or occupied area should usually be assessed before cosmetic cleanup elsewhere on the property.

Safety noteTree work can involve unstable wood, falling material, equipment, and electrical hazards. For active electrical hazards or immediate threats to life, contact the appropriate utility or emergency service first.
