Tree Near Power Lines: Know the Boundary

Electrical conductors change the rules for tree work. A branch does not need to be visibly sparking to create a serious hazard, and electricity can travel through wood, tools, ropes, equipment, or nearby objects.

Do not approach a fallen line

Assume downed conductors are energized. Stay well away and contact the utility or emergency services.

Do not trim into energized space yourself

Work near electrical conductors requires specialized procedures and coordination. A normal yard-pruning approach is not appropriate.

Utility versus property tree work

Depending on where the lines and tree are located, the utility may have responsibility for clearance around certain facilities. Other tree work on the property may remain a separate contractor task.

Storm situations

If a tree has fallen into lines, keep everyone away. Tree cleanup should wait until the electrical hazard has been made safe by the appropriate party.
