Trimming as a common homeowner term

People often say trimming when branches are overgrown, hanging low, or approaching a roof, driveway, or neighboring property.

Pruning as a more specific practice

Pruning usually implies selective cuts made for a defined reason, such as deadwood removal, structural improvement, or clearance.

The bad shortcut: topping

Topping is not simply another word for pruning. Large indiscriminate cuts can create weak regrowth and significant wounds.

Instead of focusing on terminology, explain what branches concern you, what they are affecting, and what outcome you want.
